How to Check a Reposted or Stale Job Listing

Seeing the same role for weeks—or seeing it appear again—can be frustrating. Repetition alone does not prove a posting is a “ghost job,” but it is a reason to check the facts.

Start with the employer’s current careers page

Search for the role on the company’s official careers site. Compare the location, requisition number, responsibilities, and application destination with the copy you found. If the role cannot be found there, contact the employer using independently verified details.

Check dates and posting identity

Record when you found the listing and look for a posted date, closing date, or requisition ID. Employers may refresh listings for legitimate reasons, so an old or repeated posting is a signal to investigate—not a verdict about the employer’s intent.

Look for changes and contradictions

Compare job requirements, location, salary information, and application links across copies. A role marked closed on the employer’s site, a broken application link, or mismatched details should prompt a direct status check.

What a job-posting checker can tell you

When a source exposes the relevant information, Job Reality may show posting-age information, explicit closed or expired signals, employer-site references, and whether it has observed the same posting before. It cannot prove that a company is collecting resumes without hiring, detect every ghost job, or guarantee that a role remains open.

If a position matters to you, a direct confirmation from the employer is still the best way to resolve uncertainty that public data cannot answer.
